- Interior wall painting across all room types
- Exterior masonry and rendered walls
- Feature walls and accent colour work
- Plasterboard, new plaster, and period lime plaster
- Textured and Artex wall surfaces
1980s and 1990s family homes in Earley around Beech Lane and Maiden Erlegh Drive have smooth plasterboard walls that have been repainted several times. Paint layers from different products react differently under new applications. Patches from picture hook repairs stand out visibly after painting if the filler is not primed. A full room repaint requires patch priming and a consistent base before any colour work.

Wall Painting Services in Reading
Interior Walls
Interior wall painting is the core of most decorating projects. We prepare surfaces, prime where needed, and apply finish coats to a consistent standard across every room. A smooth, even wall with clean cutting-in at the ceiling and skirting is the baseline we aim for on every job.
Modern family homes in Earley and Woodley with plasterboard walls need patch priming before any topcoat where repairs have been made. Period properties in Caversham and Tilehurst with lime plaster walls need a breathable primer suited to the surface.
Exterior Walls
Exterior wall painting covers rendered masonry, exposed brick, and stone elevations. The preparation requirements are more demanding than interior work because exterior surfaces face weather, moisture, and biological growth. We inspect every elevation before quoting and include preparation in the scope.
For a detailed breakdown of our exterior wall approach, see our exterior painting page.
Feature Walls
A feature wall in a contrasting or accent colour is the most common request within a single room repaint. We advise on colour placement and finish level at the site visit. On plasterboard walls in Earley without a previous sealing coat, a primer stage is required before any dark or saturated feature colour.
For more on feature wall approaches and chimney breast treatments, see our feature wall painting page.
Plasterboard and New Plaster
Bare plasterboard and freshly plastered walls need a sealing coat before any topcoat. Without this stage, the topcoat soaks unevenly into the porous surface and dries with patches of different sheen. This is the most common cause of a patchy wall finish on new-build and extension rooms in Lower Earley and Earley.
Textured and Artex Walls
Textured and Artex wall surfaces in Tilehurst properties from the 1970s and 1980s can be sealed and repainted without removal. We assess the texture depth and condition before recommending the approach. Some textures are better overskimmed by a plasterer before painting. We advise honestly at the site visit.

How Our Wall Painting Process Works
1. Site Visit and Surface Assessment
We check surface type, existing paint condition, and any repairs or patches that need attention. We advise on primer requirements for each surface type.
2. Patch Priming
Repairs, filler, and bare plasterboard areas are primed separately before the full-room coat. This is the step most often skipped and the most common cause of visible patches after painting.
3. Full-Room Primer or Mist Coat
Where the room lacks a consistent base coat, a full-room sealing coat goes on before any topcoat. On bare plasterboard, a diluted sealing coat is the correct first step.
4. Finish Coats
Two coats of the chosen colour, with full drying time between. Darker colours or those applied over a pale existing finish may need three coats for full opacity.
5. Cutting-In and Inspection
We inspect cutting-in at the ceiling, skirting, and any door or window reveals before leaving. Missed edges and coverage gaps are touched up before we close the job.

Wall Painting Costs in Reading
Prices below are estimates only. Every room is different. Call 0118 230 8566 for a precise quote.

Single Room, Modern Semi
A single living room wall repaint in an Earley family home, patch-primed and two finish coats, typically costs £280 to £420. Standard rooms in Earley or Woodley with walls and ceiling typically range from £320 to £500 in good condition.
Single Room, Period Property
Period properties in Caversham or Tilehurst with lime plaster walls typically range from £450 to £650. The additional cost reflects specialist breathable primer and more thorough preparation required for historic lime plaster surfaces.
What Drives the Price
Surface condition, room size, and colour change all affect the final cost. Walls with many repairs need more preparation. Large rooms in Caversham Heights have more wall area than a standard Earley semi. Painting light over dark or vice versa typically needs an extra coat.
