Garage Door Painters in Reading

Garage door painting in Reading by Reading Decorators, navy blue painted front door exterior finish

Reading Decorators paint garage doors across Reading and the Thames Valley — timber, metal, GRP composite, and uPVC.

  • Timber garage doors stripped, primed, and repainted to last
  • Metal and steel doors: rust treatment, priming, and durable finish
  • GRP composite doors: specialist adhesion primer before topcoat
  • uPVC garage doors: plastic primer system, matched or updated colour
  • Colour matching available to coordinate with the house exterior

Reading’s housing stock runs from Victorian and Edwardian semis in Caversham to 1960s–80s estates in Earley and Woodley. Timber up-and-over doors are common on the older Caversham and Tilehurst properties. Metal and steel doors appear frequently on post-war and estate houses across Earley, Lower Earley, and Calcot. Both need proper preparation to hold a finish in Reading’s damp Thames Valley climate.

Garage Door Painting Services

Timber Garage Doors

Timber garage doors need proper preparation before any paint goes on. We strip back to sound material, sand the surface, and fill any cracks or splits with exterior-grade filler. Bare timber is primed with an oil-based or specialist timber primer before topcoats.

We finish with durable exterior gloss or satin — matched to your colour choice or coordinated with the front door. Side-hinged and up-and-over timber doors are both handled using the same thorough preparation sequence. A door that is properly stripped and primed will hold its finish far longer than one that is simply painted over.

Metal and Steel Doors

The most common failure on metal garage doors is rust that was not addressed at the preparation stage. Surface rust is wire-brushed and treated with a rust converter before any primer goes on. Heavily corroded areas are treated more thoroughly and assessed for whether the metal is still structurally sound.

A rust-inhibiting metal primer is applied before the finish coat. Bubbling and rust bleed-through — the most common complaints on painted metal doors — both result from skipping this stage. The preparation is what the finish depends on.

GRP and Composite Doors

GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the most common composite material used in modern garage doors. It looks smooth and solid but does not bond readily with standard paint or primer. A specialist adhesion primer is essential before any topcoat — without it, the finish will peel.

The substrate itself does not need stripping — just thorough cleaning and degreasing before the adhesion primer is applied. Once primed correctly, the colour range is wide and the result is durable.

uPVC Doors

uPVC garage doors can be painted to a good standard with the right preparation. The key is a specialist plastic primer that bonds to the uPVC surface before any finish coat goes on. Standard paint applied directly to uPVC will not adhere properly and will begin to peel.

With the correct primer system, a painted uPVC garage door typically holds its finish for five to eight years before a maintenance repaint is needed. Colour options range from standard white through contemporary grey and black.

Combining with an Exterior Repaint

Garage doors are often painted as part of a wider exterior repaint. Doing both together means one mobilisation and a consistent finish across the front elevation. See our exterior painting page for the full scope of exterior services.

For the front door painted at the same time, see our front door painting page.

How We Paint Garage Doors

1. Assessment

We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.

2. Surface Preparation

Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.

3. Priming

Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.

4. Finish Coats

Two finish coats are standard. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.

5. Final Check

We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

Garage Door Painting Costs in Reading

Prices vary with door size, material, and the condition of the existing coating. We provide a fixed price after assessing the door.

Typical Range: £180 to £450

  • Timber up-and-over or side-hinged door (sound condition): £180–280
  • Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
  • GRP or composite door: £200–320

uPVC and Double Doors

  • uPVC door: £180–280
  • Double garage door (any material): add 50–80% to the above

What Affects the Price

Door size, material type, and the condition of the existing coating all affect the final price. Heavily rusted metal or peeling multi-layer timber doors take more preparation time and sit at the higher end of each range.

Doors in poor condition — heavy rust, peeling in multiple layers, or significant wood rot — require more preparation time and fall toward the higher end. Call 0118 230 8566 to arrange a site visit and fixed quote.
