- Mist coat application on bare plasterboard
- Freshly plastered and new build wall finishing
- Extension and loft conversion rooms
- Filler and tape joint preparation
- First and second fix finishes for new builds
Post-war and modern homes in Lower Earley, including houses around Beechwood Avenue and Chalfont Way, frequently have extension rooms built with plasterboard on dot-and-dab adhesive. Without a mist coat, neat emulsion applied directly to bare plasterboard soaks unevenly, leaving patches with different sheen levels.

Plasterboard Painting Services
Freshly Plastered Walls
Freshly plastered walls need time to dry before any paint is applied. Painting too soon traps moisture behind the paint film and causes bubbling and peeling. We advise on drying time at the site visit based on the plaster type, room ventilation, and time of year.
Once the plaster is dry, a mist coat of diluted emulsion is applied as the first step. This seals the surface and allows moisture to escape evenly. Without it, the topcoat soaks into the plaster unevenly, creating areas with different sheen and coverage.
Mist Coat Application
A mist coat is a diluted first coat, typically PVA-bonded emulsion at 20 to 30 per cent dilution, applied to bare plasterboard or new plaster. It seals the porous surface and gives subsequent topcoats a consistent base to bond to.
Skipping this step and applying neat emulsion directly to bare plasterboard is the most common cause of patchy finishes in new rooms. Extension rooms in Lower Earley and loft conversions throughout Reading are the most common application.
New Build and Extension Finishing
New build properties and extension rooms in Earley and Lower Earley from the 1990s onwards have smooth plasterboard walls and ceilings. These surfaces need a mist coat plus two finish coats for a complete result. We include all three stages in the quote.
Tape joints and screw heads in plasterboard need checking before any paint is applied. Where joints have not been feathered out properly, they will show through the finish coat. We flag this at the site visit and advise on whether additional skim is needed before painting.
Plaster Repair and Preparation
On existing properties where plasterboard has been damaged, patched, or extended, the repaired sections respond differently to topcoat than the surrounding wall. Fresh filler and bare plasterboard absorb paint faster than the existing painted wall.
Patch priming the repaired areas is essential before any full-room topcoat is applied. For bathroom plasterboard walls needing moisture-resistant treatment, see our bathroom painting page. For ceilings in new rooms, see our ceiling painting page.

Here’s How It Works
1. Site Visit and Surface Assessment
We check whether plaster is dry, assess tape joints and screw heads, and identify any areas needing additional preparation. We advise on drying time if the plaster is recent.
2. Tape Joint and Screw Head Check
We inspect every tape joint and screw head before applying any paint. Issues are flagged and addressed before the mist coat goes on.
3. Mist Coat Application
Diluted emulsion is applied to the full surface as the first coat. Coverage must be even and the coat must be allowed to dry fully before the next stage.
4. First Finish Coat
A full-strength emulsion is applied once the mist coat is dry. This is the first coat in the chosen colour. Full drying time before the second coat.
5. Second Finish Coat
The final coat produces the finished look and even sheen across the wall. We inspect coverage, sheen consistency, and any areas where tape joints show through before closing the job.
